Join Up, Why Not?

I’ll admit it: after jogging for many years, off and on, jogging can get boring. It doesn’t matter how I try to make it interesting, there is a limit to how interesting running alone on flat ground can be…
I mentioned this to my good friend, and you know what his reply was? “Join a jogging group, why not?”
“Because–” I said, slightly offended. Actually I was getting more and more offended as the seconds wore on. “–I am a hard-core jogger–I don’t do ‘group’”. It was like asking me to trade in egyptian cotton sheets for paper hand towels…
He laughed. “You’d be surprised,” he said. “They’re really quite fun.”
“Are they now,” I replied. “I’d rather stick my head in an oven.”
I wasn’t lying.
“Yes,” he said, after some time. “I’ve been going for some time. Much more fun than sticking your head in an oven.”
The sneak! And who was he? The all-time expert of head-in-oven-sticker-inners?!
I’d had no idea that he’d been going, of course, so this revelation was hard to take. How dare he? I thought. My friend, jogging in groups behind my back!
Little did I know at that point that my fate had been sealed. By being me, and willing to go along with things as a friendly person does, I had become part of the sinister world of running groups–
So there I was on my first day at the group. I was determined to hate it, but no–something else happened. I enjoyed myself! I enjoyed meeting new joggers, and the best part? Some of them were hardcore joggers just like me!
So, if you were thinking about joining a running / jogging group, my advice would be to try it out. If someone as set in their jogging ways as me enjoyed it then why shouldn’t you?
