Don't Be Put Offf!

I recently went and watched the 2010 London Marathon happen right before my eyes. Glorious! It was an awe-inspiring experience. All those dedicated people suffering for a good cause, running like their lives depended on it (which is some cases it looked like it really did).

“Wow, that makes me want to do it next year!” said someone nearby. “It really really does.”

Indeed, if you listened carefully you could hear a thousand empty and not so empty promises being made.

So did I want to run it next year? No. I damn well did not. Not one part of me saw all that pain and misery and anguish and wished I was enduring it too.

Running is tough, you see, and sometimes I think that things like the London Marathon can even put some people off. To my mind there just isn’t enough support for those who are scared to run. Come on, don’t be ashamed now, seriously, you are not alone!

My advice to you (if you are like how I was and afraid to run) would be start small and work your way up gradually. Don’t go out and buy all the expensive gear first either, because that might all turn out to be a massive waste. Instead, get some old running shoes and gear and just give it a go. See if you like it and don’t be ashamed if you find out you would rather drag yourself naked across high-grade sand-paper. Get outside in the great outdoors (clothed) and see if it’s for you. And don’t forget your music either; either that or run with a friend (preferably someone who is so rubbish at jogging that they make you look quite good). Running, however you look at it, can be pretty dull, but with the right attitude it doesn’t need to be.
