A lot of people run, fewer people run regularly, even fewer participate in marathons, but fewest of all stretch before and after a run. We have to admit it, very few of us stretch properly before we begin and after we have finished our exercise. In my opinion the lack of stretching is the main reason for every single injury a runner may suffer from.
The benefits of stretching include faster recovery, greater stamina, increased energy levels, increase in muscle strength, less chance of getting injured (pulling a muscle), increased range of movement and better blood circulation. Even some people may look at it as an unnecessary loss of time it does have its benefits and they are very useful to runners, especially those who are serious about their running (run 4-7 times a week).
Since it is a running blog I would like to share my running routine. I wake up every morning at 6 put on my tracksuit and my running shoes and off I go. I do not use any running accessories , like an ipod or mp3 player, because I like to plan my day during a run and music would be a distraction. I need ten minutes to go to the park where I run. I walk the distance because most of the time I am still not completely awake and it is also good warm-up. When I get to the park I stretch on a bench for 10 minutes and start running for 10 minutes. I stretch for another 10 minutes and then I do a 40 minute run at the end of which I am at my front door. I go inside my house, take my protein shake and then stretch for another 10 minutes. This routine is repeated everyday from Monday to Friday and I feel so good!
